Before deciding to go on an international exchange:

Once you’ve decided to do an international exchange and gotten accepted into the program:

  • Apply for a student visa (if needed)
  • Start researching potential accommodation if you aren’t staying with a host family
  • Be sure to take out health insurance
  • Apply for financing if needed.
  • Book your flight - there are a lot of reasonable student flights on offer.
  • Make sure you have all of your important documents ready and that your passport is up to date.
  • Research if you need to be vaccinated before going to your destination. Then get the vaccine.
  • Pack your bags… Things not to forget.
  • Learn as much as you can about the destination you are going to. Try to watch some Youtube videos about the destination and school. If the destination speaks a different language to you, why not try to learn the language a bit? Download DuoLingo to your mobile and start learning the language in your free time.
On your international exchange:
  • Have an adventure! Do as much as possible in the new country. Travel, meet new people and get active. It may be a bit of a culture shock initially but make sure you go in with the correct mindset of embracing the new culture and the adventure. Here’s a helpful infographic to help you understand culture shock a bit better.
  • The ups and downs of transitioning into your new life abroad
  • Be sure to get involved. It’s the best way to experience the place and make new friends. Get involved at your new school or even your church!
  • Embrace the new culture and try all the new things that it offers.
  • Never be afraid to ask for help/advice. Your teachers, advisors, lecturers or host family are very open to helping students get settled in the new country.
  • Be sure to stay in contact with friends and family from home. Skype is your friend - or even a Whatsapp group with your friends from home. It’s makes sharing pictures and your experiences easier.
  • Learn as much as you can while you are there. Take extra courses, try new sports etc. This is a once in a lifetime experience.
  • Make the most of your study abroad destination.
